*Starting salary is dependent upon qualifications, but in most cases is no higher than the midpoint for range.


 20 hours per week


This position is responsible for coordinating and providing responsive and high quality reference, reader’s advisory and programming services to patrons of all ages both at the library and out in the community.  Spanish language fluency is preferred and highly desirable.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (Specific assignment may include some or all of the following):

  • Interviews library users carefully to determine what information is required and provides clear, accurate and timely answers to all inquiries. Offers appropriate options for further inquiries, including referrals to other library departments or other organizations.
  • Promotes library collections and services to a racially and socioeconomically diverse urban/suburban community through creating flyers and posters, social media posts, (e.g. Twitter, Facebook, etc.) blog entries and reviews. Gives presentations on library services throughout the community and represents the library at community events.
  • Assists and instructs library users (in-person, by phone and via electronic means) in the use of library collections, services, equipment and facilities. Suggests specific materials in general area of interest and substitute materials when requested materials are not available. Conducts informational searches using library and community resources.
  • Organizes, promotes, presents and evaluates public programs both at library locations and out in the community. Requires ability to drive or bike (via library book bike) and transport library materials to offsite locations.
  • Maintains current knowledge of the Library’s collections and electronic resources, services and programs along with those of community partners.
  • Explains and implements library policies and procedures.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned.

Minimum Requirements

  • Must possess a Bachelor’s degree in a related field such as education, social work or library science or the equivalent combination of education and work experience such as a minimum of two years’ experience in a public library or other workplace setting working in community relations or civic engagement. Must possess a valid driver’s license and a safe driving record

Knowledge, skills, and abilities in the following areas:

  • Fluency in Spanish is preferred and highly desirable.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a diverse group of customers and staff throughout the Library, as well as outside the organization.
  • Considerable knowledge of a broad range of literature and authors, films, music, and current events. Must be conversant with social media and personal mobile technologies currently in use. Ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagrammatic form, while dealing with several abstract and concrete variables.
  • Ability to multi-task many variable duties, requests and responsibilities.
  • Ability to prepare business letters, expositions, summaries, and reports, using prescribed format and conforming to all rules of punctuation, grammar, dictation, and style.



The ability to work in an active setting, with the ability to periodically use force to exert up to 50 pounds. The ability to lift, carry or otherwise move objects, books, materials, etc. using up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.

The employee is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions.

Ability to work in a variety of environmental conditions including:

  • the outdoors in a variety of weather conditions, such as extreme cold, snow, sleet, rain, high winds, high temperatures and humidity.


Additional Information


Work is performed under the supervision and guidance of the Community Engagement Manager.  The individual has contact with other library agencies and staff at all levels, and uses the necessary resources to meet and achieve goals and/or objectives.  Work is assigned through specific projects and customer/clientele request.  The employee is responsible for prioritizing work tasks, and for identifying and utilizing the appropriate resources to resolve a problem or situation.  Work performance is reviewed through observation, completion of projects, status reports, conferences and meetings.  Guidance is provided through the City Code, departmental policies, City operating practices and procedures, and other resources as applicable to specific projects assigned.  Work is evaluated at least annually, with respect to customer service, problem-solving ability and performance in accordance with this classification standard.


The employee has regular and frequent contact with the general public.
