Nature of Work/Essential Functions

Scheduling/Hours: This position offers 20 – 40 hours per week typically between the hours of 6:30 AM – 5:00 PM; Monday-Friday. Some positions will be scheduled to work evening and weekend hours. This position will report directly to the assigned master tradesman, supervisor and manager with the support of staff within the Department.


These Seasonal Full and Part Time team seasonal team members assist departmental field employees with duties and responsibilities associated with daily facilities maintenance and fleet services job assignments. Provide assistance and resources to employees, managers, and the general public regarding programs within the City of Evanston.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (Specific assignment will include some or all of the following):

  • Uses power and/or hand tools to assist with building, shop and grounds maintenance. 
  • Cleans assigned areas in various City facilities, shops and lots. 
  • Paints walls, borders and other areas as assigned.  
  • Assists in seasonal maintenance.
  • Assists with administrative duties.
  • Replaces light lamp.
  • Installs signage.
  • Unloads and stocks construction or automotive materials/parts.
  • Files and scans documents.
  • Completes other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements


  • Must possess a High school diploma or GED or higher.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license and a safe driving record.

Knowledge, skills, and abilities in the following areas:

  • Knowledge of the materials, methods, tools, and equipment used in restroom cleaning, safe operation of vehicles and general public clean-up.
  • Ability to read, understand, and apply instructions for the safe operation of cleaning supplies and tools, as well as hand tools.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, co-workers, and the public.
  • Ability to greet and communicate with the public in a courteous and professional manner.
  • Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Working knowledge and ability to operate hand and power tools and equipment safely.
  • Ability to multi-task in performing various duties, requests and responsibilities.

Additional Information


Must have the ability to work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions such as extreme cold, high winds, rain, snow, sleet, high temperatures and humidity; to stand for long periods of time, bend, and work outdoors with limited lighting; to work with chemicals, vehicles or equipment fumes and gasses, dust and dirt. The employee must also be able to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.



Work is performed under general supervision of a Facilities and Fleet Supervisor, Operations Coordinator, Master Tradesman or Lead Mechanic. Initially employee receives instruction on the safe use of equipment in the performance of maintenance tasks, orientation to the department and work rules. Once proficiency with the variety of tasks performed and equipment used is gained, the employee is usually responsible for performing and completing the work independently according to City work rules and safety regulations. Work is checked by supervisor or master tradesman on a daily basis, or at the completion of the assigned project. Guidance is provided through rules and regulations, policies and procedures, personnel rules and OSHA.



The employee has regular contact with the general public when working his/her normal shift. They may be asked to field questions and respond to concerns. The employee has contact with other City employees to relay factual and specific information regarding work assignments.


Chosen candidates will be required to provide proof of licenses, certifications, and education required for this position.  Candidates will also be subject to qualifying pre-employment processes, including medical examination, drug/alcohol screen, employment verification, and criminal background check.
